The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament in Switzerland has been a thrilling, high-scoring spectacle, with an amazing average of 3.57 goals per match. Only four teams remain – England, Spain, Italy & Germany.
Last week served up four thrilling quarter finals. Spain beat the host nation, Switzerland 2–0; Italy edged out Norway 2–1 with two goals from Cristiana Girelli, while the other two quarter finals were decided through a penalty shoot-out.
England came from 2-0 down to stage a late comeback and eventually beat Sweden on penalties; and despite having a player sent off in the first half, Germany overcame France, who were chosen by many as possible surprise winners of the tournament.
Four countries will battle it out in the semi-finals, with a goal to reach the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final this Sunday.
Semi-Finals Preview
England vs Italy
England, the defending champions, rely on grit and tactical nous. Coming off a dramatic comeback, they’ve shown resilience under Sarina Wiegman. But Italy is riding a wave of momentum, progressing to the semi-finals for the first time since 1997. They are led by the very experienced captain Cristiana Girelli, who is appearing in her fourth Women’s Euro finals and has scored three of their five goals so far in these finals, including a brilliant double in the 2-1 quarter-final win against Norway.
Sarina Wiegman has triumphed at the last two Women’s EUROs – with the Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022, though both times as hosts and with a perfect winning record. In her four previous EUROs and World Cups with both countries, her side has at least made the final every time.
England will be fired up after showing a ‘never say die’ attitude against Sweden in the quarter finals plus their overall strength in depth, makes them favourites to progress to the final, but Italy’s confidence and underdog status could spring a surprise.
Germany vs Spain
Germany, eight-time champions, displayed grit and organisation in their penalty win over France, even after losing a player to a red card in the first half. But in Spain, they will face the reigning world champions and a team who are technically superb and dominate possession.
Spain were the pre-tournament favourites to win this year’s Women’s Euros. However, Germany historically dominates Spain, who are unbeaten in eight encounters.
This is going to be a classic clash between Germany’s physical and structured style vs Spain’s fast, possession hungry, total football magic. I wouldn’t be too surprised if this goes all the way to penalties, but if there’s a winner before a dreaded shoot-out Spain will win with their superior technical ability, confidence, and fluidity.
